Beauty concerns

I have oily hair, what should I do?

At the base of every hair, there is a sebaceous gland that secretes sebum, a natural oil that lubricates, protects and adds shine to the hair.

However, certain factors can cause excess sebum production, leaving your roots looking oily. Discover our haircare tips and rituals to put an end to oily hair.

Wash hair less often

Leaving more time between washes may seem counterintuitive if your hair tends to get greasy, but washing your hair too often tends to stimulate the sebaceous glands and make them produce excess sebum.

It then builds up at the roots instead of working its way down to the ends, leaving the top of the head looking oily and shiny while the hair lengths become slightly drier with every wash.

Ideally hair should be washed two or three times a week, depending on its length, its thickness and your lifestyle.

Use products suited to your hair type

What if your hair products were to blame for your oily hair? Some shampoos tend to strip the scalp of its natural oils, causing the sebaceous glands to produce even more sebum.

Choose a gentle purifying shampoo and combine it with a mask or conditioner to nourish hair lengths and ends.

Brush your hair morning and evening

Regular brushing helps to distribute sebum from the roots to the lengths and ends of the hair, boosting its natural hydration.

For even better results, use a brush containing boar bristles, which are gentler on the scalp and help distribute oils better.

Eat a healthy diet

What you eat can also affect the way your hair looks. Food high in sugar and saturated fats are very inflammatory for the skin and hair follicles, which may lead to scalp imbalance.

A balanced and healthy diet will definitely benefit both your skin and your hair.

The oily scalp ritual

The must-haves for sebum buildup on the scalp

Hyperseborrhoea, or overproduction of sebum, is when the scalp is covered with sebum, even after washing. To leave your roots fresher and lighter, apply a pre-shampoo mask that will “soak up” the excess sebum. Complete your ritual with a purifying shampoo, gently washing your hair without overly scrubbing your scalp to avoid further stimulating the sebaceous glands.

Here are the key ingredients selected by Hair Rituel by Sisley for purifying your hair:

• WHITE CLAY : absorbs excess sebum. Unclogs and eliminates impurities as well as pollutants. Captures undesirable odors.

• JAVA TEA EXTRACT : Rebalances the scalp.

• COTTON PROTEINS : reinforce the hair's protein barrier.
