Behind the Look: Soft Focus & Playful Minimalism

Ulla Johnson’s Autumn-Winter 2025 collection captivated NYFW with its rich textures, metallic accents, and deep earthy tones. Complementing this luxurious vision, lead makeup artist Romy Soleimani worked with Sisley Paris backstage to create a makeup look that was chic, minimalist, and effortlessly elevated. This season, the approach focused on soft, velvety skin, sculpted eyes, and plush pigmented lips.

Romy’s makeup philosophy was all about creating a soft-focused, minimalist look that felt luxe yet approachable. “The key word was velvet,” says Romy, which defined the day's beauty aesthetic playing with texture and tones. She created two key looks for eye and lip to showcase on the runway in line with Ulla's collection.

Follow along for a glimpse behind the scenes, and learn how to re-create these key runway looks with Sisley essentials, including some of our latest launches.

1 - Matte & Velvet Skincare

The first step, as always - choosing the right skincare. To achieve smooth, velvet skin, Romy used Sisley’s Tropical Resins Mattifying Moisturizing Skincare to moisturize and control shine in the T-zone, paired with the Velvet Nourishing Cream With Saffron Flowers to deeply hydrate the outer perimeter of the face and neck. This formula combination ensured a balanced, natural glow. She incorporated the Gingko Gua Sha beauty massage tool to sculpt and de-puff the skin before makeup, enhancing circulation and promoting a lifted look. The result was an impeccable base, ready for makeup application.

2 - Satin Complexion

With skin prepped and glowing, Romy applied Phyto-Teint Perfection foundation for a satin finish. She used a flat foundation brush to apply a light layer of this skincare-infused formula, gently pushing the product outward for a velvety base. To brighten the under-eye area and add dimension, she used Phyto-Cernes Eclat concealer, blending the creamy formula with a brush on the inner corners and patting it out with her fingers. Finally, Romy used v to set the makeup, sweeping it across the face for skin that looks radiant without being shiny.

3 - Kitten Eye

Minimalist makeup can still be eye-catching! The eye look was a fun take on the classic cat-eye liner, featuring sharp, sleek lines to complement Ulla Johnson’s lush collection. Romy applied Ligne Noire Eyeliner starting slightly in from the outer corner of the eye, gliding it upward towards the end of the brow in a triangular shape to create a small kitten wing. The flick was delicate yet bold, giving the models a modern edge while keeping the overall look elegant and understated

4 - Crushed Velvet Lip

The lips were equally as striking, with Romy custom-blending four shades of the new Phyto-Rouge Velvet matte lipsticks. She blended a combination of Beige Crush, Orange Fawn, and Rouge Royal on the back of her hand before applying as the lip base, with Rouge Flame added in the center for dimension and an extra touch of color. She used the tips of her fingers to lightly blur the edges, giving the lips a soft effect, tapping the center to gently diffuse the pigment. The result was a plush, velvet lip that perfectly complemented the modern yet artisanal vibe of Ulla’s collection.

Runway Ready

The makeup beautifully mirrored the spirit of the runway, which featured rich metallic fabrics and floral sculptural pieces by French artist Julie Haminsky.

The models exuded effortless sophistication, with makeup that was bold yet subtle—a true reflection of Ulla and Romy's shared design philosophy.

The looks are a perfect blend of luxury and simplicity, allowing you to bring runway glamour to your everyday beauty ritual.
