Sisley & the environment

For over twenty years Sisley has been striving to reduce our environmental impact, taking into consideration the whole production process, from product design to sourcing ingredients. A structured action plan with long and short term aims for 2025-2030 was established around three key priorities.

Sisley is a French family company that’s continually striving to improve with a structured approach to creating quality beauty products, while reducing our environmental footprint.

CLIMATE & BIODIVERSITY - Reducing pressure on the environment

When it comes to energy, water, waste management and logistics, the company’s growth goes hand in hand with daily actions to continually and successfully reduce our environmental impact.

Sisley’s sites benefit from the latest technological advances in insulation and energy saving.

Energy consumption

Sisley’s sites have the highest certification standards (ISO 45001, ISO 14001 et HQE) meaning they benefit from the latest technological advances in insulation and energy saving. Long term investments have been made to ensure our machinery has the lowest energy consumption possible, lighting is optimised with LEDs and sensors are in place to limit the energy used.

Sisley uses renewable energy wherever possible.

Renewable energy

Sisley uses renewable energy wherever possible. Covering a surface area of 18,000m2, the solar power station installed directly on the roof of our logistics warehouse in Val-d’Oise is one of the largest in the Paris region. It produces 100% of the energy to run our offices. Since 2021, our industrial sites are fuelled by biogas, meaning a reduction of 850 tons if CO2 per year. The logistics site also uses geothermal energy.

Sisley is innovating to recycle waste sustainably and responsibly.

Waste management

The best kind of waste is waste that does not exist. Sisley is reducing waste at source (re-using packaging inserts: bubble wrap, cardboard boxes) while also ensuring that residual waste finds its value (recycling publicity materials). As a company, we are constantly working with our service providers to find innovative solutions and establish new waste treatment subsidiaries (plastic, glass, labels).

Meanwhile, Sisley is experimenting with new sustainable transport systems such as rail freight or net zero emissions with the COZEV project (Cargo Owners for Zero Emission Vessels).

Distribution and transport

Most of Sisley’s products are made in France. As an international brand, shipping to more than 100 countries worldwide, the company is constantly faced with the impact of its transportation. After ten years of work to reduce transportation by air, in favor of maritime transportation, air freight now accounts for less than %. At the same time, Sisley is experimenting with new, sustainable means of transportation such as rail freight and net zero emission initiatives such as the COZEV project (Cargo Owners for Zero Emission Vessels—a collective initiative to make the transition to zero carbon emission maritime transport).

Sisley is committed to reducing pollution from used manufacturing water and has a water purification station installed on site.

Water management

Water is an essential element and we should preserve it, both by reducing consumption and optimizing production processes. At Sisley’s production site, the machines are set up to save water, with closed loop circuits, and cleaning systems using pressure jets and rotating nozzles. We clean 100% of the industrial used water we evacuate using the purification station installed on site to limit the pollution of water downstream.

Sisley supports environmental preservation and biodiversity projects both internationally and in France.

The preservation of biodiversity

As a company we are working to preserve the species that grow on our sites in France: cultivating bee hives, developing eco-grazing, planting endemic plant species and 4,000 trees and bushes etc. In addition, Sisley supports environmental preservation and biodiversity projects in France and internationally. One of these projects is in Cayenne in French Guiana, where the Sisley Foundation created the Jardin Sisley des Lauracées in partnership with the French coastal conservancy and CIRAD. The garden is dedicated to the study and preservation of native plants like coffee, cacao and ligneous species of Cordia alliodora, Bagassa guianensis and rosewood.

ECO-DESIGN & RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION - Reducing the impact of our products throughout their life cycle

For Sisley, the environment and innovation are closely linked, for both products and facilities. Product lifecycles are being analyzed, packaging as well as point-of-sale advertising materials are being redefined with eco-design in mind.

Sisley works constantly on sourcing raw materials with a responsible purchasing policy throughout the value chain.

Raw materials

As plant specialists for over forty years, Sisley’s research laboratories carefully select the plants used for active ingredients while respecting the biodiversity of local communities. Our partners share the same concerns and are particularly committed to sustainable supply:

RSPO certification for palm-based ingredients, short circuits, recovering bi-products created by other industries. Our Velvet Nourishing Creams with Saffron Flowers range is a perfect example, its flagship active ingredient, saffron flowers, is a bi-product of the food industry.

Each product in the catalogue has been designed with our “4R” approach: using the right weight (Reduction), considering Refilling and Recycling options and using Recycled materials.

Packaging

Each product in the catalogue has been designed with our “4R” approach: using the right weight (Reduction), considering Refilling and Recycling options and using Recycled materials. The environmental impact of each new packaging solution is measured during development using the SPICE (Sustainable Packaging Initiative for Cosmetics) lifecycle analysis tool, developed in collaboration with other groups in the cosmetics industry.

Sisley is committed to innovation by using recycled or organically sourced material whenever possible. Sisley is committed to innovation by using recycled or organically sourced material whenever possible.

Our goal:

Combining the best of nature with cutting-edge science to create quality beauty products that are safe and effective, all while minimizing our environmental footprint with exacting, innovative processes.

COMMUNITIES & SHARED VALUE - Taking action and supporting our ecosystem

Sisley strives for excellence at all levels of the company and supports all its stakeholders (employees, suppliers, customers, etc.) in this endeavor, both within the company and along its value chain.

Sisley’s 4900 employees around the world are using their influence to further reduce the environmental impact of the company’s facilities.

Activism among Sisley employees

Sisley’s 4900 employees around the world are using their influence to further reduce the environmental impact of the company’s facilities. Actions are undertaken internally every day. Motion detectors have been installed in offices to optimize lighting, outdoor lighting at nighttime has been reduced, photocopiers are shared to avoid wasting paper, waste is sorted and recycled, charging stations are available in parking lots for electric vehicles, rainwater is collected to irrigate landscaped areas, and so on.

Sisley’s teams are working to support environmental causes with the collaborative spirit the brand is known for.

Sisley Tree Challenge

Together, in Sisley’s trademark spirit of teamwork, company employees are working to support environmental causes. The Sisley Tree Challenge is a prime example. This yearly athletic competition brings together all teams worldwide to support the protection of the environment, biodiversity, the oceans, and local communities.
