Exclusive Interview about all things beauty with Rachel Goodwin, the makeup artist behind the new Les Stars capsule collection
From her early years of training on the back stages of Paris and New York’s fashion runways and the San Francisco Opera to her current home of Los Angeles, makeup artist Rachel Goodwin’s vision is as impressive as it is diverse. Her artistry and beliefs on beauty have catapulted her to the forefront of the industry as one of the most requested artists of our time.
Moving to New York City to pursue her dream, Rachel began working under some of the industry’s most iconic: James Kaliardos, Peter Phillips, Mark Carrasquillo, Tom Pecheux and Linda Cantello, gaining a dedicated following in editorial, print advertising and the music industry. Her clientele eventually led her to Los Angeles, where her expressive work has flourished ever since.
Rachel’s roster includes the actresses and models who have helped define generations: Emma Stone, Julia Roberts, Brie Larson,
Jennifer Lawrence, Michelle Dockery, Cindy Crawford, Amber Valetta, Penelope Cruz, and Renee Zellweger, to name a few.
Her work has been featured in top publications such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, W, Glamour, GQ, ELLE and Harper’s Bazaar with photographers including Peter Lindbergh, Craig McDean, Annie Leibovitz, Carter Smith and Ben Hassett calling on her
unparalleled talent and expertise for their biggest shoots.
We spoke with Rachel before the Oscar’s, but rather than ask her a set of typical beauty interview questions, like "What is your desert island product” we decided to play a game of fill in the blanks! We also asked her to dig deep and share five random facts that make Rachel, Rachel.
☆★ She Loves to Cook
Cooking has been a huge passion of mine since I was a little girl. Mostly it comes from my curiosity about the world and different cultures. I love to cook, probably mostly because I love to eat!
☆★ Project Selection is Key
There isn't one singular thing that stands out for me as the pinnacle of my career. Each accomplishment has been important in its own way. If there is one thing I’m most proud of as an artist, it would be that I have earned the ability to choose my projects.
☆★ She Loves to Dance
I’m not sure I’m that talented at it, but I love to dance. I was in a Middle Eastern dance troupe for eight years in my 20’s and now I just take classes for fun and to stay sane.
I love music and I love the way it gets me out of my head.
☆★ Her Family is Everything
As a working mom, my family is my priority when I am home. My two little boys keep me busy and I am very involved in their school.
☆★ LA is a Major Source of Inspiration
Before moving to Los Angeles, people would always say things to me like, “Real artists live in New York or Paris. LA is no cultural capital”. As an honorary Angeleno, I have found the total opposite to be true. LA, with its forward energy, multicultural complexities, movie mythology, ancient landscapes and modern architecture, is endlessly inspirational to me. I am proud to call Hollywood my home.
