Hair Rituel Squad: Aubrey Marie

Aubrey Marie is an LA-based hairdresser whose work can be seen in some of your favorite TV shows and movies including VEEP, I Love Dick, Lady Bird and The Good Place. Always knowing she had an eye for classic period-style hair, Aubrey’s first industry work was styling wigs for theatre including ballets, operas and Cirque du Soleil. She transitioned into film and television by continuing her work as a wig specialist, often keeping the trade secret that your favorite character’s hair is actually a wig. Aubrey loves the way hair can transform and create characters and this love of being transported into a certain place or time through film inspired her to be a hairdresser. As a matter of fact, Rita Hayworth’s perfectly coiffed hair flip in a dance number from the movie Gilda is still a magic hair moment she remembers to this day. When she’s not busy fingerwaving and styling, Aubrey enjoys traveling or going to concerts with her husband.

1.How did you fall in love with Sisley-Paris?

The first time I used the Precious Hair Care Oil Glossiness&Nutrition I was hooked!! It’s the absolute best one I have tried, and I have gone through a lot of them!

2. Who has had a major influence on your life or career?

My amazing husband Scott.
He grounds me and asks me questions about my work from an outsiders perspective and it really makes me stop and rethink things. Every time I’m debating a job offer he asks me if it fits into these three criteria:

1. Does it fulfill you creatively?
2. Does it give you worthwhile connections?
3. Is it just a paycheck? I love my work so much, but at the end of the day, work is work and I’m doing it to have a lovely life with him.

3. What beauty tip was passed onto you by a mentor, friend or family member when you were younger or just starting out in the industry that you still carry with you today?

My mother always told me “Every day is an audition” since I was a kid. We’re a theater family, she’s a dancer, and I grew up performing in musicals. It always stuck with me and proves even more true today. You never know who you will meet at any point of your day. If you’re a nice person, you work hard, you’re driven, people will like you and want to work with you.

4. Similarly, can you share your favorite hair advice or tip?

My favorite hair trick is from an English hairdresser I assisted on a photo shoot. She showed me this incredible way to give hair “S” shapes, or crinkles as I like to call them, with a flat iron. It works on thinner hair you’re trying to fluff up, it’s beautiful on super thick hair you’re trying to smooth. Depending on the way you use the technique you can make the look super polished or really natural. Plus it’s very hard to do on yourself so it makes us hairdressers look amazing when we do it

5. Where do you find inspiration?

Working on set, I am always creating characters through hair. My inspiration comes from research and from people watching. I love analyzing people’s hair when I’m out and about. It can tell you a lot about them. I also love diving into a specific time and place, learning what social and economical factors play into the looks of the time.

6. What are the Sisley-Paris products you can’t live without?

Only three?
Precious Hair Care Oil, Regenerating Hair Care Mask with four Botanical Oils, Revitalizing fortifying serum for the scalp.

7. If you could be in the room with anyone while they were getting their hair done who would it be?

I think it’s more about the hairdresser and what they’re doing than who’s head they’re working on. However, if I had to choose one person, I would say Sandra bullock. I heard she has a ton of hair which requires a very specific prep for a wig to make it flat. I’d be very interested to see that happen

8. What hair trends can we look forward to in the coming months?

I have a feeling that we won’t see as many trends, but we will see more people embracing their personal style when it comes to their hair. Whether they love a vintage look or a sculpted structural shape, or a natural unkempt look. People (women and the trans community especially) are feeling more and more empowered to own themselves and not ascribe to a trend or societal norm.

9. What is your favorite Hair Rituel Product and why?

Hands down, my favorite product Is the Precious Hair Oil. It’s so light and clean feeling but it works so well to strengthen and moisturize the hair. I use it on everyone!

10. What is a great hairstyle that can be created with one of the new products?

We have endless options with the Rituel line because we’re starting with super healthy scalp and hair using the shampoos and conditoners. But I love a perfectly air dried look using the Precious Hair Oil all over wet hair to start. Then twist the hair in sections and air dry it. Once it’s totally dry, I shake it out and add more oil on the ends to get a beautifully shiny, naturally waved head of hair

11. Why are you excited about this new brand by Sisley-Paris?

I am so excited that Sisley’s incredible skincare is becoming hair care. It just makes sense to start with the ingredients and technology of skincare and putting it to work on the scalp and hair.

12. How does it feel to be a part the #HairRituelSquad?

It’s a truly empowering and humbling experience. Being among a group of hairdressers that are killing it in their fields and who are all throwing their knowledge and expertise behind Sisley is incredible! I am so grateful I get to offer up my knowledge from being on film and tv sets every day.

13. What is your favorite way to relieve stress?

Mindless tasks and repetitive motion really chills me out, I remember having a breakdown when I was younger, and for some reason I started doing my make-up, once I finished my face I had completely calmed down. As a hairdresser today, I love sorting hair pins into tiny bundles. Really anything organizational makes me happy and calm.
