Because textured hair is naturally drier and more brittle, it needs to be deeply nourished to compensate for its characteristic lack of sebum. This is due to reduced sebum production: because of the curl’s curvature, sebum does not flow down the entire length of the fibre.

The Andre Walker hair typing system
Andre Walker’s system classifies hair into one of four categories (type 1 to type 4) according to curl tightness, ranging from straight hair to tightly curled hair. These categories are then divided into three subcategories (type A to type C), each of which correspond to hair thickness.
Type 1: straight hair
Straight hair is characterised by a smooth and even surface that naturally reflects light, giving it a glossy appearance. Its structure is generally round, preventing the formation of natural curls or waves.
Type 2: wavy hair
Wavy hair is characterised by S-shaped waves that can be more or less pronounced, giving it a flowing and dynamic texture. Depending on the thickness of the hair, waves can range from subtle to more obvious.
Type 3: curly/textured hair
Curly/textured hair forms defined spirals that add volume and movement. This highly curved helical structure makes it very elastic but can also make it more delicate.
Type 4: kinky hair
Kinky hair can be recognised by its dense texture and tight Z-shaped curls. This complex structure gives it a unique, voluminous appearance, but also results in a high degree of shrinkage that often masks its true length.
