Sun exposure has positive effects on the person—both physiologically and psychologically. It promotes the synthesis of vitamin D and tans the skin, a sign of a fresh appearance and good health in our society.
However, sun exposure can also have harmful consequences; dehydration of the skin and accelerated skin aging, (resulting in the appearance of deep wrinkles) loss of firmness, and brown spots.
These consequences can be minimized by using appropriate sun care products and by wearing protective clothing and accessories. Choose your sun care according to two criteria: your phototype (sensitivity to the sun) and the degree of sun exposure.
Moderate exposure: you’re going outside to do some outdoor activities on a mild day (not too hot).
Significant exposure: you’re going away to the beach in the summer, the climate is moderate to hot, and you want to be in the sun.
Extreme exposure: you’re going away to a tropical location or the mountains, or you take part in extended outdoor sporting activities (boating, hiking, skiing…)
The phototype is determined by the color of the skin and hair, as well as the skin’s sensitivity to the sun.
Phototype 1: your skin is extremely sensitive to the sun.
You have “milky white” skin, with many freckles, and you systematically sunburn when exposed to the sun. Moreover, you do not tan or hardly tan at all.
Phototype 2: your skin is sensitive to the sun.
You have fair skin and possibly some freckles. You often sunburn when exposed to the sun, but you may achieve a tan after several days of exposure.
Phototype 3: your skin is in-between, and somewhat sensitive to the sun.
You have fair skin, but you tan relatively easily and do not sunburn, except after intense exposure to the sun.

Sisley’s line of sun care products also features soothing and hydrating after-sun skincare products that prolong your tan and help to neutralize free radicals that have accumulated in the skin after a day of sun.
To soothe skin that has been stressed by sun exposure, minimize the external signs of skin aging, and prepare the skin for the next day’s exposure, apply Sunleÿa G.E. SPF 30 for the face, neck, and décolleté.
To soothe and hydrate the skin, prevent peeling, and lastingly prolong your tan, you should use the After-Sun Care . Adapted for the body and the face, this skincare product contains very low doses of self-tanning active ingredients that enhance your tan and leave the skin with a luminous and satiny finish.
- Apply the sun care product before exposure to the sun, and reapply at least every 2 hours.
The use of sun care products is not meant to extend the time you can be exposed to the sun. As such, no matter the level of protection selected (low, medium, high, or very high), in order to ensure constant protection, it is imperative to reapply the product at least every two hours and after each time you go in the water, when you are sweating, and after drying off with a towel.
- Limit the length of your exposure to the sun, especially during the first few days.
It is preferable that you expose yourself to the sun progressively and avoid sun exposure during the brightest time of the day. In addition to this sun protection, you should also use protective clothing, sunglasses with filtered lenses, and a hat or even a beach umbrella.
- Apply a generous amount of the sun protection product.
An insufficient application significantly reduces the level of protection against UV rays.
- Do not expose babies or children to direct sun.
